you major in the oboe?

when we first met, I probably shook your hand, asked your name, undoubtedly forgot to tell you mine and when we inevitably reached a certain point in the conversation you asked me ”so what do you study?” and I said, “I study the oboe.” Which roughly translates to: I major, as a degree, as a professional certificate from an institutation in an instrument. And you kind soul, bless you, said, “WOW! That is so cool!” but there was a small voice in your head that said, what is that exactly? you can major in the oboe?

I am here to say: thank you for asking and here is the answer:

the oboe… you may know it as “The Duck,” in Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. Or maybe as that instrument that keeps playing that one note at the beginning of every concert. or if you are like me and have a certain affinity for Disney movies then you know it as that one instrument that plays a solo after this multi-billion corporation once again kills your favorite character (RIP Tadashi) in the first quarter of the movie.

but yes! you can major in it.
